Many think that suicides increase during the long, dark nights of December & January. Many also think that the added family pressures of Thanksgiving, Christmas & the New Year celebrations exasperate suicidal tendencies. Both ideas are wrong. Suicide rates actually decrease during the winter holiday season. It is the spring time ... April, May and June ... when there is a marked increase in suicides. Why? Because, as daylight increases and the weather becomes warmer, there is a notable increase in outdoor activities. Those struggling with depression feel unable to join in with this more active life-style.
